Test & Development Engineer
Job Description: The role will include.· Liaison on electrical/electronic and project planning issues with customer and other company sites including manufacturing and design.· HVAC control system requirements capture and specification writing.· Diagnostic specification writing.· Liaison with mechanical and CAD Engineers over issues such as electrical harness design and drawing release.· Electrical integration of air conditioning system into the vehicle.· Management of EMC and environment test requirements.· Occasional technical support for the company’s manufacturing plants.· Liaison with third party component and software suppliers.· Electrical installation checks.· Analysis and test of CAN and LIN bus traffic.· Resolution of electrical problems in prototype and production vehicles.· Support for sign off testing including hardware in the loop testing.· Support for air conditioning test/system tuning engineers.Personnel: No direct supervisory responsibilities but expected to manage own workload and work effectively with other disciplines within the air conditioning systems department.Resources: No direct financial responsibility. Will have the use of laboratory area including electrical test and measurement equipment. Software tools such as CANalyser, CANoe and various in-house tolls are available.Planning: Will help in the planning of projects on which they are working and will be responsible for the day-to-day implementation of those plans.Decisions: Working unsupervised on day-to-day activities after a suitable period of training. Decisions taken in conjunction with manager until competency has been proven.Supervision: A manager within the Air Conditioning Systems Department.Contacts:· Daily contact with the customers’ engineers by phone, e-mail and face-to-face.· Occasional support for meetings with customers’ senior management.· Colleagues across the company (primarily in Sales and Engineering).· Engineers in Japan, Germany and other company offices worldwide.Working Conditions: · Based in an open plan office and use of laboratories with component and vehicle testing facilities in Coventry.· Regular travel to customers’ offices for meetings.· Occasional working from customers’ premises and test facilities (within easy reach of the Coventry office).· Very occasional support for overseas test work where extreme ambient conditions can be experienced (-30C to +45C).· Occasional unsocial hours i.e. early starts, late finishes and very occasional weekend working may be required.
Skills & Requirements: Education/Qualifications· Degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineer or alternative degree with significant electrical content.· Equivalent qualifications or proven track record will also be considered.Training/Skills· Good PC skills including Microsoft Office suite.· Some knowledge of Electrical/Electronic circuit design using microcontrollers, sensors and actuators.· Some knowledge of software design for embedded systems using C language.· Knowledge of vehicle electrical systems, CAN and LIN communications networks.· Basic knowledge of materials properties and use, plastics and metals.· Some familiarity with Matlab/Simulink/Stateflow.· Visual Basic programming experience would be useful.· Practical knowledge of electronic assembly skills, including soldering, circuit and wiring harness assembly.Work Experience/Knowledge· Some experience in an engineering environment.· Work experience in an automotive or electronics manufacturing environment.· Experience with and/or knowledge of air conditioning systems.Special Aptitudes· Good communication skills – both written and verbal to technical and non-technical personnel at all levels.· Planning – Workload and project plans.· Negotiator – Able to persuade others to follow your ideas and proposals.· Flexible – Able to adapt to changing requirements and circumstances.· Strong problem solving and analytical skills.· Ability to work well under pressure.Disposition· Team Player – Keep colleagues up-to-date with project progress and collaborate as required.· Relationship Building – Able to build trust and confidence in other people.· Diplomatic – Level headed and awareness to sensitive situations.· Self-motivated – Ability to work on own as required (after a suitable period of training).Interests· Technology generally.· Cars and automotive.· Electrical and Electronics including own projects.
