Reports to (designation):Principal Engineer



Job Purpose



The Senior Engineer is responsible for the supervision and guidance of staff in the undertaking of engineering projects, from concept to completion. He/she will undertake personally the larger and more complex projects to the satisfaction of clients.



The Senior Engineer will be required to consult and liaise with clients, keeping them properly informed of progress on projects, promptly and courteously.



He/she will work within the aims of the Division, making and encouraging enthusiastic and innovative contributions to these aims and to the standards of engineering work undertaken by the Division.



The Senior Engineer is expected to under take his/her duties with a high degree of both commitment and professionalism, to set an example and inspire other staff.

He/she will be required to promote the Division and its services through contacts with other Directorates and set an example of courteous and efficient dealings with them.



Job Duties and Responsibilities



Directing a small professional project team as required, giving instructions, allocating staff to project duties, co-ordinating activity, planning and monitoring project performance, under the general supervision of a Principal Engineer.



The design and supervision of building services and energy conservation engineering projects/schemes through all work stages of the Association of Consulting Engineers as directed by the Property Design Manager.



Carrying out engineering feasibility studies and development schemes, together with other specific professional tasks, as directed.



Taking instructions, developing briefs and executing designs and controlling works in contract.



Working as a member of a multi-professional project team.



Preparing estimates, financial reports on project costs in consultation with other professional staff and advising the Project Team Leader.



Financially controlling projects within agreed cost plans and budget allocations, exercising proper professional control over expenditure, throughout all work stages. Preparing certificates for payment and checking claims in consultation with other professional staff.



Checking resource input throughout all work stages of the project to ensure the financial viability of the project within Division costs and agreed dates.



Providing professional advice and carrying out special professional tasks, as directed.



Undertake any other comparable or lesser duties commensurate with the general duties of the post, as required by the Head of PMD.



Knowledge and Skills



The post holder will be a Chartered Engineer and either a Corporate Member of IMechE or the IEE, with relevant post qualification experience. Skills should be constantly updated through CPD.



Experience of Microsoft Office applications, AutoCAD 2002 and CAD M&E design packages is essential.



A sound technical knowledge of construction and a working knowledge of current legislation, including Health and Safety matters, is required.



Project Management and Customer Care skills will need to be exercised.



Embrace innovative and sustainable practices.



Knowledge and experience of the workings of Local Government, in particular with reference to ‘Best Value' and the modernisation agenda.







Resources (job holder's responsibility for physical and financial resources)





The post holder will be responsible for the proper and effective use of all equipment provided by the employer to assist in the execution of duties.



While there are no direct budget responsibilities, careful cost control will need to be exercised in the context of project finances.





Working Environment



The post holder will be based within our office environment.



The post requires the examination of construction sites in all types of environments, including inclement weather, objectionable or hazardous conditions e.g. climbing scaffolding or entering confined spaces (requiring physical agility and awareness of Health and Safety)



Conflicting demands and deadlines are a regular feature of the post, resulting in occasional stress.



The postholder should be able to fulfil the travel requirements of the post.
